Although Bailey’s life revolves around Ethan, Ethan’s life does not revolve around Bailey. As a puppy, Bella finds her way into the arms of Lucas, a young man who gives her a good home. When Bella becomes separated from Lucas, she soon finds herself on an epic 400-mile journey to reunite with her beloved owner. Along the way, the lost but spirited dog meets a series of new friends and manages to bring a little bit of comfort and joy to their lives. When winter falls, Bella and Big Kitten go for a walk in the snow, stop at the frozen pond, and playfully slide across the ice. The next day, Bella hears a dog barking and goes to join him, only to arrive after the owner has been buried.
The biggest creature in Pandora, Tulkun, is also considered the wisest. These creatures resemble whale-like giant cetaceans in their appearance and share a deep spiritual connection with the Metkayina people. These sentient gentle giants have developed their own advanced society and culture; they have their own mathematics, forms of poetry, languages, dances, and music. According to director James Cameron, the only reason Tulkun has not been able to develop technology is that they lack the ability to perform intricate physical movements. The idea was borrowed by Cameron after observing Humpback whales on Earth, which are quite intelligent and have their own social structure and musical notes that they can pass down through generations.

In the movie, the outcast Payakan forms a bond with Lo’ak, the younger son of Jake Sully, who identifies with the Tulkun through a shared experience of alienation and guilt. Metkayina Tsahik Ronal considers the Tulkun leader named Roa as her spirit sister. Adult Tulkuns can be seen with tattoos painted on their belly and snout, in similar motifs to the ones Metkayina clan draws. The connection between Tulkun and Na’vi is an allusion to the indigenous Native American traditions, where animals are referenced as mediums to communicate beliefs and spiritual values. Also, Maori traditions were considered inspirations as well, as they consider whales to be a revered presence in their mythology in the form of the god Tangaroa. The legend of the Maori Whale Rider also influenced Pandoran mythology.
By the end of the film, it’s revealed that Bella has spent two-and-a-half years making her way back to Lucas. For most of that time, she’s trailed by a pack of wolves apparently playing the long game before making their move. When they do, they’re vicious and seem like they’re on the verge of killing her when, in an example of the venerable literary device known as cattus ex machina, Big Kitty shows up to fend them off. Bella makes her way back into the woods where she is found by the wolves. She is chased and cornered but quickly saved by the now fully grown Big Kitten. She attacks the wolves and sends them running, and she nuzzles up with Bella.

The film starts with a small dog narrating about her current home life. She is a puppy who lives with her pitbull mother and siblings, plus a cat and her kittens, underneath the ruins of an old house. They are found by two bad men, an animal control officer named Chuck and his buddy Gunter.

Then one day the cruel forces of Denver’s Animal Care and Control show up and grab as many animals as they can, including Bella’s mother. Shortly after winter, Bella begins to chew on the rope, an effort ultimately futile when an increasingly desperate Axel replaces the rope with a chain. The homeless eventually died, leaving Bella unable to eat or drink because of Axel's heavy body hanging on the chain. Bella is fortunately rescued by two kids who pull the chain from her neck before she dies of thirst.

Bonny Light Horseman's "Deep in Love" was featured twice in the movie, with the 2nd time... In the last scene in this film is song, which is not listed in soundtrack.
After Bella is picked up by Animal Control because pit bulls are banned in Denver, Lucas has no choice but to send her to a foster home until he can figure out what to do. With four hundred miles of dangerous Colorado wilderness between her and her person, Bella sets off on a seemingly impossible and completely unforgettable adventure home. Bella’s happy enough in New Mexico, but she misses Lucas, so she decides to run away and find him, which is brave, dumb, and extremely doglike. After a while, she falls in with a pack of dogs with cute names like One-Tooth and Crazy Hair, picking through the trash and begging for scraps from local businesses. But, she soon learns that they’re just slumming and they all have homes to whom they can return each night. She comes across a park where other dogs are eating from the garbage.
The next day, Big Kitten leads Bella up a hill overlooking Denver. Lucas tries to oppose the developers from proceeding until the cats are secured, but Gunter, who is overseeing demolition, refuses to stop. He and Lucas have words, with Gunter threatening to go to war if Lucas does not back off. When Lucas refuses, Gunter reports Bella to animal control as being a pit bull. The responding animal control agent, Chuck, has been paid off by Gunter to report Bella as a pit bull, and to confiscate her, as pit bulls are an illegal breed. Bella is taken away, but the help of Lucas’s girlfriend, Olivia, and the help of his high school buddy, Wayne, smuggle Bella out of the pound.
